From the Publisher
The Start of It All
Through much of America, especially in the South, Black people had to sit in the back of the bus. If there wasn’t enough room, they were forced to get off. This wasn’t the first time that Rosa Parks, or any Black person, was told they weren’t allowed or welcome, but she was determined to make it the last.
The Montgomery Bus Boycott
Once again, Rosa Parks was threatened to be removed from a bus for not giving up her seat. But this time, she didn’t budge. Her determination ignited a movement called the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The boycott lasted for 381 days and led to desegregation on public buses. And that was only the beginning!
United We Stand
Following the Montgomery Bus Boycotts, other things began to change in the United States. There were no longer separate water fountains, elevators, or even schools. And Rosa wasn’t the only one to speak up for the freedom of others. Martin Luther King, Jr was an immense force behind equality for Black people across the country, but there were thousands more ready to make change.
Speak Up
Rosa Parks always spoke up for what she believed in—even if it was hard or if it got her arrested. Her actions led to thousands of people following in her footsteps for equal rights. She even received the Congressional Medal of Freedom. She’s proof that we’re all in this together, as long as we raise our voices to make change.
